When I created my BT3 betas I could drop the time that lilo waited to boot and select which option to boot in the syslinux.cfg file. I can no longer find that file in the BT3 Final virtual machine.

Is there some other way to make these changes? Why would this be missing?

You can directly control those settings through lilo.conf

The setting for delay is "timeout=blahblahblah" and as far as selecting which item to boot....well.....that's the whole point of lilo is it not.

Thanks! I'll try that.

Well...since this is a virtual machine, and since BT3 Final is the only thing in the VM, I really don't know what they hell LILO is doing in there in the first place.

Keeping in mind that I AM a linux n00b, I would think that you would only use lilo when booting >1 OS.

But, that's just me....

A boot manager gives you the ability to put in wanted/needed boot time options.

You'll always have a boot loader running.

Sometimes it is, by default, set to remain "invisible, as with Windows and its boot loader - ntldr.

As already pointed out, you then have the facility to adjust booting parameters.

I rather liked the clean running of the BT3 beta Live CD. I achieved the same thing on my USB sticks with BT3 beta, but the VM insists on using lilo.

It doesn't affect the end goal of pentesting, it's just that I hate steps that seem to have no use for me. For others, I am sure that they find this bootloader useful. I do not.

Perhaps, as I continue to learn about Linux, I will find some use for what seems to be an irritation at this time.
