well im using an airlink awlc4130 pcmcia card supported by bt3. well when i start off doing airmon-ng stop ath0 / airmon-ng start wifi0
then i go to airodump ath0
i just get a blank terminal screen.
sometimes airodump works sometimes it doesnt.
then when i run kismet, kismet just locks up on the main kismet screen. anyone ever see this happen before?

As far as I'm concerned, I believe that atheros based card have special usage, maybe you should try with wifi0 instead of ath0 ;)

use this
airmon-ng start wifi0
it will create one monitor interface for you named ath1
run airodump-ng ath1
and for kismet modify it and put source according to your card.
read here to learn configuring kismet
http://www.kismetwireless.net/documentation.shtml
source should look like this
source=madwifing_ag,ath0,ath0
running kismet will destroy VAP and will create a interface by name kis0.

Have you tried updating the madwifi drivers? Does the card actually work in any other mode (e.g. managed) and able to connect to your access point?
Not sure why airodump isn't working.
I'd try adding a difference source to kismet.conf
source=madwifi_g,wifi0,madwifi
