Hmm..sorry, never had this problem. Xconf always helped with me.
Maybe these video cards are not supported.....or if so maybe a magic boot option which I don't know may help like xdriver=.......
For Ubuntu this helped for old IBM laptops: xdriver=radeo opengl=xorg-X11

Xconf is broken for me too, use the command "xorgconfig" and do the settings by hand instead. Takes a little bit of time but it works, make sure to you do the graphic card settings correct though.

I foresee the same problem for me. I can't get xconf to work without hanging my computer, but up to Backtrack 2 Beta starting KDE automatically configured everything without a problem.

Now, to configure everything manually it would be of great help to have a look at the contents of the file(s) in which startx stores the autodetected hardware of our machines. Anyone knows what that/those file(s) is/are?

Or maybe I'm wrong and such files don't even exist or the data they contain is completely useless for this matter, who knows? (and it's a real question)
