I have coded  this past days a gui for downoading and installing LIVE BT2 to a usb stick, flash card or usb hd in a way that the king of newbeez ;) can do it so if your interested in this freeware, here is the link, feel free to ask questions, feedbacks welcome.....:
Welcome to BackTrack 2 USB 4 WIN
1)What the hell is it ?
The purpose of the BackTrack 2.0 Downloader and USB-Stick burner for Windows, is like for BT1, and previous betas(based on slax 5 .mo) to install BackTrack 2.0 in a few clicks to a USB-Stick under Windows systems, in a convenient and user friendly interface.
This operation is still possible with MSC, but only for BT1 an BT2betas based on slax 5 .mo standard. BackTrack 2.0 Final is based on slax 6 .lzm standard, so it won't work with MySlaxCreator  because of that.
For realize this you'll need to format the Stick, extract the BT and BOOT folder to the USB-Stick from within the bt2final.iso and make the Stick bootable. This 3 operation need to Format in Windows(normal right click format will do the job), need to have an iso software or an archiver software installed in order to mount or extract bt2final.iso, and finaly to run the batch shell file located in /BOOT in order to make it bootable.
So I built a GUI for theses operations with theses characteristics
Built-in Fonctions :
Downloading BT2 from mirror
User can use also an already downloaded release
MD5 Hash control of releases
Formating FAT32 USB
ISO extraction with 7z
Making Stick bootable :
Internationalisation of BackTrack's KDE (mean BT in your language directly) :D
Add modules possibility
Update mirrors and Interface
....
Ideas Welcome......
Thx to BT TEAM....RESPECT....

So, I've tried this utility on two different computers and with 2 different USB sticks. (One is a 1gb, the other is a 2gb) I've gotten the same results every time I've used it. I downloaded a copy of BT from the mirror sites, point the program at it, pick my USB drive, it formats, then it says it's going to copy everything over, and nothing is ever copied. I can't figure out what's wrong. I've had to install it on my USB stick by had, which is no big deal, just lettin ya know it doesn't seem to be working right for me. If ya have any questions, or need to know anything about the computers, let me know and I'll provide that info.

Salut shamanvirtuel,
1) If i want to add modules, (the pre-compiled ones that are posted here sometimes), can i just transfer them on Windoze and place them in the "modules" folder on my usb stick?
2) Is there anyway of accessing the BT root directories on my stick through Windoze?
(For example to copy a dictionary folder into the pentest folder for ease of access)
Je te remercies encore, le logiciel que tu as fait marche tres bien....especiallement pour le roi des newbies comme moi
shamanvirtuel
05-22-2007, 10:13 PM
yes you just have to past modules(lzm format only) into /bt/modules
for your second question the best thing to do is create a data directory under win(it's possible stick is fat32) copy paste your dictionnary file into....
after booting for access it
just click under konqueror /go/Storage media/usb-stick/ go in your data dir .... or
in shell cd to /mnt/sdb1_removable(put here your device name) /path to data dir/
that's all

Hi,
I'm a BackTrack newbie and Linux novice (but remember CP/M with some fondness).
I have created a Bootable USB Flash drive with some simplicity as follows:
1) Format USB as DOS Bootable with HP Disk tool: Google [hp cp006049.exe]
2) Copy CD contents (created from ISO) to USB drive
3) Copy all syslinux files to USB root
4) Shell out to CMD, go to USB drive "x:" and run x:\syslinux.exe x:
5) Configure PC to boot from USB
et voila! (This being written on Laptop running BT2 form USB flash 2 days after finding...)
thanks to [pettingers.org/ code/backtrack-final-notes. html for the core process, but his notes didn't quite work.

shamanvirtuel,
Just want to say thanks, you have been one of the most helpful posters on this forum for me. I started out trying to install full version to 4 GB usb, got the kernal error, so I decided to use your install, and it worked great. But I am unable to access the modules. I am not sure if it was because I deleted your aircrack-ng pw and then I added aircrack-ng-0.9.
Am I suppose to somehow activate these modules once in the slax enviroment?
I am also using your usb save changes and it works great.
Thanks
shamanvirtuel
05-24-2007, 08:29 PM
Are you saying once booting, modules don't load ?
normally you have nothing to do they are uncompressed(if located in /bt/modules) when booting
just type the command....
sdel in shell for secure delete module
ntfs3g in shell for ntfs3g module
and so on for others.....
you use the 2 partition method for saving changes ?
or the changes.lzm method ?
thx to give feedback

Yes after booting as far as I know the modules aren't loaded. There are no shortcuts and they don't seem to work from the console either. I went in through conquer and I was able to put a module in memory.
I am using your two partition save method.

please could try bt debug at boot time
like this
boot : bt debug
will halt many times just ctrlD to continue...you will see modules loaded or not...norm if they are in bt/modules directory/ they autoload...your the first one telling me about this pb....

Sorry, after debugging I realized it was using my BT folder off my harddrive, not my usb flash drive. When I originally tried to install back track I got an error and so I tried putting the BT folder on my harddrive. I then found out it was due to an acpi error and I used acpi=off and now it works great.
All the modules loaded just fine I can now run them from the console. But I still don't have any shortcuts under the KDE.
Any ideas?

No this soft is for live install only
you can see the post i made for a quite different approach than real install on usb.....for a 4 GoUsb...you made a 1go part, install bt onto it in live mode....create data partition of 3go ext2....each time you boot, type cheatcode :"bt changes=/dev/devidofext2datapartition" with this will saves the changes into data partition....and still can use data part for your files....

Hi
Just to tell you thanks for your work shaman, in spite of the fact that your installer never worked for me. Let me explain, I tried your program and all I could get was a "could not find kernel image" right at the beginning of the boot (where you have the "boot :"). After googling for an answer I thought my usb key wasnt bootable , so I tried 5 different ones, same problem.
Just before giving up, I remember that when I installed MPentoo, it was advised to format in Fat and not Fat32 for it to work (at least for the guy who wrote the tutorial). So I manually installed BT and formated in FAT and to my surprise it loaded without problem.
So if any of you have the same problem, just format in Fat, use "syslinux -f x:" and extract the iso to your usb key, it should work. Still, I cannot enjoy your 2 modules and your language packs (I'm French as well) but at least now I can use BT
shamanvirtuel
05-26-2007, 07:19 PM
really weird.... ? is it an U3 key ? it could also happen with previous version, because was without any test of dld modules or dld iso.....so....
have you try the RC1 version the only one who works now in this time....the previous BETAVERSION and TESTINGRELEASE are now nonfonctionnal(due to mirrorring), and a little buggy (need no space in the paths of iso....)....so if it's your case please download RC1 RELEASE....
just add these two modules(already fonctionnal but still beta) in modules dirs
http://ovh.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/bt2usb4win/kde-i18n-fr-BackTrack2.lzm
http://ovh.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/bt2usb4win/french.lzm
you do need to add language to country admin panel of kde.....
TRY THIS ONE the only working version :
http://ovh.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/bt2usb4win/BT2USB4WINvi18n-MULTI23-RC1.exe
you will get an windows regular installer, wich will install the BTINSTALLER in your startmenu..........
if you never see such windows installer before be able to using my freeware, you got the wrong version......dl the new one....please...and feedback.....
BTW :DWelcome to French BT Family.......:D

Shamanvirtuel,
I have a couple modules (.lzm) that I added to the modules folder that I want to burn to my USB stick.
I tried using your program but the MD5 hash doesnt match because I edited to ISO. Is there any way around it?
I have UltraISO, are you familiar with how to use UltraISO to burn the ISO (or the extracted folders Boot and BT) to a USB stick?
I can only get it burn to a CD/DVD.
Thanks!

The easiest way is to add them after you have done the install
Just open the usb drive in windows and copy the .lzm modules to the bt\modules directory

so if i understand well you got this error when installing the software not while using the software ?
are you able to use the software anyway ?
i think it's maybe due to the software i use to build the setup.....
i need to check it's compability with vista
are you logged with administrative rights ? you do need to for formatting....and other things...could be that also

I have used BT2USB method to make a bootable USB BT2. I had no problem making it. This tool is very very easy.
I use a Acer Travelmate 4002WLMI with a Sandisk 1GB Cruzer USB stick (a little bit old maybe. It is not U3).
It booted perfectly but freezed at:
"Starting USB support
Fatal error occured. Live data not found. Searching for BT directory..."
I tried with another computer with same result.
In order to overcome this problem, I copied BT directory to C: and then it worked perfectly. I am a happy camper now but still, I'd like to know why it doesn't finish to boot entirely from the USB key.
Any idea?
Tx for this excelent job.

so sorry you get pb, you are not the only one with this one
it comes (yes i find by simulating errors) because of a bad ejecting of keys under window$ !!!! sometimes in the reboot process, the drive cache for key is not well synchronised causing a corrupted installation...
hope to fix that.....as soon as i have time....i know the pb and how it comes....it's more than half way of fixing process...

Hi everybody,
I just tried this soft and because of my slow connection (... and my mother), I couldn't DL BT2.iso (I already have the CD but not the ISO with good MS5 Hash). When I uninstalled the soft, no error message appeared but 2 folders still were in "Start Menu" and in "Program Files".
I couldn't erase them because of "impossible de lire le fichier à partir du disque source" (can't read the file from source device). After minutes on google and a hundred useless threads I found a post about a space after folder's name. That was it !
To erase it, you must type in your cmd:rmdir "\\?\C:\PATH\TO\FOLDER\FOLDER_NAME_WITH_SPACE"
Well if you have had the same trouble and you see this post, maybe that's the way to heaven :)
See yah !
PS: sorry for my bad English.

I have the same problem as you got JiBesH.
Except that this folder error occurred on installation, I have the start menu folder that cannot be deleted and the folder in program files.
I have tried lots of methods to delete the folder and nothing works.
the folder's size is zero bytes and when I try delete it, windows says
this is no longer located in C:\Program Files.
btw, i'm using vista.
Thanks
**
Bugfix for shamanvirtuel, i noticed there is a space at the end of the installation folder, this may be causing this error, i found on the internet that a few people had had the problem with characters like commas or consecutive dots(..).

hello shaman,
I have searched but I could find a way to make also changes on my USB.
I tried the balding parrot way, but that didn't work for me. TUTORIAL: live install with changes, swap and data partitions
Do you have any suggestions how I can do that with your tutorial. What I saw is that yours make it on a 2Gb disk.
Is it possible with your tutorial to make for example 3 drives on my 2 gb usb so that I can make also changes on my usb and also store data...
thanks for you advise.

Don't put your program down like that, it has been a godsend to many people including me.
I only suggested my manual method, as an alternative way of doing it, that just may work where your way has failed for some unknown reason.
Your installer is great, and i would bet that there are many many people that will agree with me on that.

ok i got it to work but for some reason it wouldn't install on my 4gb USB but i tried it on my 1GB and it worked great even though it had a problem with the install. so all in all i dont think that file impacted the installation of BT2. it did take a very long time for it to reformat the 4GB drive but that could have just been a problem on my end.
Thanks again for your great program.
Keep up the good work and high quality of your code.

Hi, I have been playing about with manual installs of BT2 and also automatic ones using your software. After a little playing I got it all installed however came up against a little stumbling block.
I have experienced a number of problems getting the actualy USB device to boot, I read somewhere that sometimes various motherboards do not support USB booting from all USB ports and therefore have moved the drive around through all six ports that I have yet still to no avail.
Is this a problem that many users have experienced?
I do not believe that its a problem with the installation process and I am happy that I have set my BIOS correctly to boot from USB (first or only) yet it still does not want to play.
Excellent project though thanks for all your work.

VISTA PB FIX :
i work all around my codes to find what happened under vista :
the thing is that vista prevent my soft to access directly to a physical drive.....
there's is no workaround to integrate this in lua , native language of the installer
SOLUTION : reboot vista in safe mode and run my installer under this mode.........

MD5 CHECK WILL BE NOW OPTIONAL
CALCULATE SPEED OF MIRRORS AND CHOOSE THE BEST ONE

I HOPE TO SORT ALL IN LESS 2 MONTHS
I WILL CODE THIS TIME IN JAVA FOR WINDOWS NORMALLY......

I have used BT2USB method to make a bootable USB BT2. I had no problem making it. This tool is very very easy.
I use a Sandisk 1GB Cruzer USB stick (a little bit old maybe.
Hi there all.
Was there ever a solution to the above, as the exact same happens to me. When the folder is moved to the c:, it works np. Thanks!

Maybe its the flash drive (Sandisk)

ok let's go ive solved some mysteries about usb keys :
if you need to make a bootable key be sure to use a "DISKONKEY system" and not "USB FLASH MEMORY 5.0" systems
your pc(majorly) won't accept to boot a usb flash memory.... only a diskonkey or driveonkey systems
the usb flash memory have to be formatted in a special way to be accepted , im working on that and will feedback
FOR VISTA users, here is how make BT2USB4WIN works correctly
right click on the BT2USB4WIN exec / property / compability / windows xp sp2 / run with admin rights / apply /ok
fix some problems..........
hope to find a solution because 2go and 4 go keys are usually "USB FLASH MEMORIES " and not "DRIVE ON KEY" whereas 1GO keys often are "DISK ON KEYS" ..........

this one will work with only the bt2final reliz
a bt3 reliz is in work atm
if you tried with this reliz then , it means that the md5 hash is false
DON'T USE DL MANAGERS
you can easily check the md5 of the reliz, the sum is below the download link on RE page
and there's many freeware for win to check md5

reliz soon .... really this time
im always late ... lol but not this time
some little news to make you wait :
ive implemented a boot menu modifier
it open the syslinux.cfg and allow you to edit it and then save it .....
useful for add bootcodes or remove unwanted boot menu entry
maybe i will add too also (if i have time ) a way of recreate a new iso with modified options
really don't sure
shamanvirtuel
03-17-2008, 12:32 AM
some precisions
so what is the difference except it use bt3 ?
well as i said i rekoded the whole transfert concept
why ? because now you can edit your iso or your rar content (aka add or remove modules) or edit edit syslinux configuration before burn it to usb
you will be also able to create a new iso from your modified iso or rar reliz
INSTALLER DOESN't MATTER IF IT'S A DVD OR CD RELIZ... bot rar and iso files will be mounted in a new virtual disk called z:
this will be accessible via windows explorer
the installer have an option to show you a mod page before burn it to usb
if selected then a new page will show you what you can do :
1 download & install SV goodies pack (my softs bundled)
2 open module folder via explorer, now remove or add new lzm as you want take care because vm disk is limited 1M in order to not overload your virtual memory
3 open syslinux.cfg in metapad and edit it, add your bootcodes , what you want , remove menus etc .....
4 MAKE A NEW ISO WITH YOUR MODS......this can also be used to easily get a .iso file from a .rar dvd/usb reliz
that's all for the moment so stay in touch
:)
feedback welcome on the new options
BTW sorry but old options were removed
INTL : no language pack ready for bt3 like in my old one(will come in 2.5)
EXTRA : need pack & useful pack option removed as bT3 have all... replaced by sv goodies pack

OK so I have been putting this through it's paces this morning and have to say it's a really nice job as usual.
I did however find that if you exit the program without actually creating a usb install with it, then the virtual z: drive will stay until you reboot. Now this may be a good thing in some circumstances, but it would be nice to have an option to be able to remove the virtual drive without the need to reboot. This only seems to be the case if you don't create the install and I may just have missed the option to "unload" the virtual drive.
I also found that the transfer of the files to the usb stick was very slow, the same files could be transferred manually in almost 2 mins when it took about 45 mins using the installer. Hey it's beta, I expect bugs and things like this, but it works other than that.
I REALLY like the option to add modules to the virtual drive so as they are transferred to the usb stick before writing. Very useful.
I REALLY REALLY like the option of editing the syslinux.cfg file too, this is really going to be useful when you implement partitioning for changes etc.
The md5 check worked perfectly, I Hex edited the rar and iso and it picked up the change in both cases, the speed of the check was surprisingly fast too.
The option to create a new custom iso that includes any extra files you wish is going to save so many people a whole lot of work and the forum an awful lot of questions.
Can't wait to see what the "goodies pack" is going to include.
None of the points I have made are criticism, they are only feedback based on my tests.
By the way, for the tests I used VISTA as I figured that this was probably the OS that would be most problematical, and if it worked in vista then chances are it would not be a problem in Xp.
Each install I created worked flawlessly.
Great work Shaman
I am eagerly looking forward to the next version.
Come on people, give this a try and give Shaman your much needed feedback.

Two questions:
Can I install it to an SDHC card with this for my EEEPC?
and
Does this allow for saving changes? I've been having a horrible time getting that to work with other ways.
Thanks

03-19-2008, 10:21 PM
yep BP ....
i know ... betas was here for that , be sure it was like that for everybody...slow
final will have another configuration ; you will have 2 diff modules one will be the installer, the second the one that will edit iso / maybe even burn them on cd / and of course recreate one .(mkisofs.exe)....
im glad that edition of syslinux is ok for you, i will add some auto edition thing like in old myslaxcreator add nodhcp or no sound in a click in radiobutton, or open it in metapad like beta ... you will have the choice
... flexibility
yes you can use your SDCARD no pb
i even did it on a microsdcard for mobile phone (2GO) , just for phun
a 3mm square BT3
for save change wait next beta2 version i will begin by this option in the "oneclick menu" because i know many persons wait for it .
but you will still have to create an ext2 partition where you want (hd or on the same usb) and select it in gui
cheers

Hi there, last thursday I put this through the test and successfully got it installed to usb. I like the software very much.. only some slight probs with it though. It did crash the first time I tried using it then I had to do the ctrl+alt+del trick. I remember having some slight confusion over some buttons but I cant remember what it was again, and yeah it took a long long time for it to get on my usb stick. Much longer than 45 mins.. more like an hour and a half for some reason.
It's on it now though and thanks alot for this. It's a very kind thing you are contributing to the community!

Thank you Shamanvirtuel:
Great job! However, I am not smart enough to make it work ;-(
I have created a video and a image of my results of your application.
Hopefully, I'll be smart enough to attach the file, lol
Nope, I can't do it, something to with, "I may not post attachments."
All that work to show you how it worked, and I can't post it as a attachment, oh well.
The video was over 2000 kb.
The end results of the application created a 1 kb boot file.
Thank you for all your time and work to produce this
