Hi everyone
i am on a hubbed network and i wish to capture the unencrypted password running around, ie: email, istant messengers, and so on, plus i wish to monitor what particular pc are doing ie: if they are running p2p soft or just using web.
How should i set wireshark for those tasks?
Thanks in advance

You said, "if they are running p2p soft or just using web."
No one here will help you invade other peoples privacy. Sorry dude, but we don't condone illegal behavior here at this forum. However I hear theres a really AWESOME forum called Netstumbler, (http://www.netstumbler.org) which will take you by the hand and walk you through all the steps personally. There, (not here...) you will be treated with great courtesy and respect, as well as having everything instantly explained in a clear and friendly manner. I Suggest you go there. And stay.:D

And its MY JOB not to help you accomplish this. How are we suppose to know that your job is to do this?? And if its your job to invade peoples privacy and you can't already do this...why in the hell are you even in the security / or networking field??

actually i am just an assistant network manager at my university
since out network is usually extremely slow since the great number of p2p softwares running on it, i have to hunt and deinstall them. i don't need to see what they are downloading, i need to see only IF they are using p2p, that's all.
plaintext password is for another reason, it could be nice to get a few teachers passwords to see about your grades :D

Well then...here ya go..this is all the help you will receive from us here...
1. Click start
2. Open up control panel.
3. Click add remove programs
4. Look for bittorrent, e m u l e etc....
5. Click on the P2P software
6 Click uninstall
EDIT****
Don't forget to go into program files and delete the leftover files..and delete from registry as well.

This was the first attempt to decieve us..lol...how lame.

Now the truth comes out. He wants to get his teachers password(s) so he can change his and his friends grades..and possibly give his rival in the class a F cause this guys jealous. This is an PRIME EXAMPLE of why I wanted an "Established Members Area" here. This was just an example of the length of lies and deception some people will go to to get us to disclose certain information to them. Keep on your toes guys and help weed these "mischievous blackhats or wannabe blackhats "out of here. Theres a report button on your screen for a reason! ;)

If you really want to stop p2p just block IP's and ports that solves the problem for most p2p users.

can i just block all the headers matching a particular filter?
like blocking off msn, icq, jabber, p2p headers?

If you're an assistant network admin for a uni, I'm sure there'll be far better resources open to you at the uni. Surely your boss, the network admin will teach you your job anyway!? (That's ignoring the burning question "how the hell did you get the job in the 1st place?"!?)
If you're a student thinking you can "Click Here" to somehow "hack" the uni network, I'm afraid you watch too many films ;)
We don't need this here, thanks.

An assistant network manager title means you are assisting someone with more experience and knowledge than you, ergo, capable of teaching you these very simple and stupid things. There is no need to come to a specialized forum such as this one to ask these kinds of questions.
It's more likely you're a student trying to spy on others, than the story you are telling us.
Thread closed, thanks for all the fish,
Mother
