Hi all,
just frustrating problem..
i need to use winxp on this machine and running the alfa awus036h with newest win32 drivers. also installed openvpn 2.0.9 (also upgraded to newest RC to be sure).
i view nearby APs - result 12 (3 open, 9 wep/wpa)
i connect to open AP - signal strength = 40-50%
everytime connecting to AP which has signal less than 50% it disconnects after random period, usually just a few minutes.
After this, overview APs give only 2 APs left - refresh wont help
i notice those 2 APs that are there have high signal strength > 75%
Only thing I can do is:
take out USB - reconnect after few seconds - Alfa starts up again - then list contains all APs again..
Doing this every 3-4 minutes - VERY frustrating !!
please help me out here what can be causing this!
machine: dell inspiron 9400 -2gb ram and other default config

hi!
I have same machine than you, but wifi: 4965agn...
First I will not trust the signals power of XP neither the one from "intel wireless" software!
It simply seems to be wrong! sometimes I have like 2 bands on an open connection it hardly works and sometimes I have 1 little band and I can connect very well!
also, i had problems with my 4965 and the drivers at the beginning, it seems similar to yours: every time it was changing of wifi network in the background or automatically connect to another one, my whole xp was "hanging" for minimum 1-2 min until when it found a new network, everything went back again...
Like it remembered any of the actions I made, like is I was upset and clicked many times on a shortcut for example it would launched many times the program afterward!!
so I dont know why but it seems "dodgey" so far the wifi there!!

Even though your connecting to an open AP..its still illegal. This has been discussed several times and the only way I can sum it up for you is that if I left my door unlocked and you came into my house without my permission, would it still be considered a crime? Of course it would. Same principle applies here.
Ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law. The law is the law and I must enforce the rules and guidelines here as well. However though, since this is a common assumption that several people make, I believe that a 3 day ban is sufficient enough in your case so that you may take time to reflect upon this and read up on legalities of connecting to open AP's.

Per PM from PLATER who opened a new account under the name SWIFT
Hello,
You can ban this SWIFT all you want, but why on earth did you ban my PLATER nick.
Connecting to open AP is illegal???????
How can you say that?????
So if a person leaves the AP open, they are not allowed to connect to it???
People are not allowed to connect to any AP which is not their OWN, nothing to do with whether it is protected WEP/WPA or not.
So read my post and say me why you banned me please.
Thanks,
PLATER / ALIAS SWIFT
I explained in that thread why it was illegal. The ban was only 3 days. I had to do it because it violated the forum rules. Its always illegal to connect to an open AP unless its a public AP like a hotspot. Please don't create anymore accounts or i'll be forced to ban your IP address as well. I gave you a break by not banning you permanently. Please don't push this issue.
Both accounts have been banned. Your PLATER account is only under a 3 day ban. The SWIFT account has been PERMANENTLY banned.
Next step is banning your IP if you don't cooperate.
