yeap , in order to make this new subforum useful, here is my fist contrib to programming subforum

im proud to anounce i've begin the coding process of a new installer for bt

this one will be dedicated to usb install with or without save changes.....

the basic functions of my well known usb installer for windows will be ported into this new one....

auto download, md5 check, format and install

additionaly i will allow possibility of save changes on a spare partition (onto the usb key or into the fixed hd of the laptop)

i bet this will be the most useful coding project i ever give to this communauty

so lets go :
i plan to do it in java with a nice gui......
any idea is welcome............

ETA : 15 days

don't look the colors, but the idea is here.....

BTW, in titlebar you can see the new name of this project wich is derivated from my windows installer name :

SAVE CHANGES METHODS :
selection of partition for changes via a gui (must be created in DESTINATION DRIVE STEP)
selection of partition for swap via a gui (must be created in DESTINATION DRIVE STEP)

MAKE BOOTABLE AUTO

REBOOT THE SYSTEM........

if anyone see something i forgot, please feel free to put it here.....

:):)
the one we must thanks is YOU, who set up this wonderful place for codes addict like me.......

i hope in the future we can make something useful(like collaborative projects) of this subforum.....

i work really flawless on this project, nothing has blocked me yet, in the core shell codes or in the gui (for the moment).....

i can say that the ETA will be respected for beta (PREDEFINED USB KEYCHAINS)

hd installs with highly customizable install will be in final, beta will test the core processes and i will go further after......

BTW here is my definitive idea of gui....miss some infos like md5 button in local iso panel, % done when dl, colors are not definitive.....

it's a kind of wizard(look at the "next" button bottom right) :

first page = iso selection & dl (see screenshot)
second page = destination drive and creation of FS (screenshot will come)
third page = installation process & install output (screenshot will come)

i love this project, i really begin to have some good background to java even if i still a noob (1 month now).....

Great work, you say in the final HD will be fully customisable, can that also be an option for USB sticks too?

That way it will allow for people who would like a different option and also help to make it future proof.

An option to say how may MB each of the partitions is and an option to put "REST" if it is the final partition and you want that one to take the rest of the drive.

shamanvirtuel
10-08-2007, 07:30 AM
yes it will be

the auto scripts are only here to test methods........
even if i will leave them in final because it will be useful to have ready to go profiles for 1go / 2 go / 4 go

yet here is the current selection process

1 select size of keychain
2 select if you want add swap space (512 or 1 go)
3 select if you wan win extra partition (512 or 1go)
4 select if you want to save changes (rest of disk)

win extrapartition will be disabled for 1 & 2 Go
swap space will be disabled for 1 go

i will allow more highly configurables profiles in final version, but beta will come like that........

Well I guess your right there.... If there is a type of live install, or a way of doing them, then I would bet that we have both done them, if not then between us we have done them all.

If I had known you were waiting for my input, then I would have said something sooner.

so i will send you a little prebeta before beta (maybe one day or 2 before beta) just to check all is ok......

i will finished the destination drive selector in the day....

so i will post screenshots....

i've cancel the auto scripts for keys but now
im able to list the drives and autodetect sizes, you can also plug a usb after starting the soft, just need to click update button that will do an fstab-update + read again drives, select one and display its partition table........
i can wipe the Partition table
Create a new FS structure via a gui (partitions for bt, swap and changes )

the install output will have a progress bar and a text output.....
but is not finished yet

THE DESTINATION DRIVE MANAGEMENT TOOL IS FINISHED NEARLY EXCEPT FONTS & COLORS

you select a drive and automatically its partition table is show in 'drive geometry'

in a click you can erase partition table

http://shamanvirtuel.googlepages.com/btidrive.png

when you will click on the launch a wizard, A 4 steps wizard will appear in 'bt structure wizard'

1st STEP : CHOOSE INSTALL TYPE (changes saved or not)
2nd STEP : CHOOSE SWAP SIZE (0/512/1024MB)
3rd STEP : CHOOSE FAT32 DATA PART SIZE (0/512/1024MB)
4rth STEP : VALIDATION
the partitioning begin auto and output is shown into the gui.........

will post wizard screenshots tomorrow

shamanvirtuel
10-17-2007, 06:48 AM
HERE IS THE INSTALLER ITSELF, THE FINAL PART

it's currently transfering bt iso, previously mounted to a temp dir into the bt partition on targeted usb drive

after transfer finish, you choose to add or not the changes mod to lilo and make usb bootable

last step is the check process wich check that iso was correctly transfered and check each file system created onto the drive

http://shamanvirtuel.googlepages.com/btiinstall1.png

some mods and adds will occur, surely....
i will add an install summary info panel, and maybe a custom add parameter line to lilo like nodhcp nopcmcia.....

:o

i want to apologize for the fact im late .... but it's not for nothing...

i've nearly finished all gui parts and boy, it's so sexy !!!.....

details :

First screen, welcome splashscreen + SOURCE SELECTOR

here you can choose a mirror, dl bt from mirrors, with an autocheck of mirror and connection avaibility, a popup error message occur if so....

you can also use a local bt2final.iso and even a customized iso (less than 800 mo for the moment)

i added an option for enter a custom md5 for your modified iso......

the md5 check is MANDATORY, but you don't need to know checksums for official reliz.........it's inside bt2usb4nux........

after checking md5 you will be thrown to the second screen....

second screen : DESTINATION DRIVE MANAGER

here you have a combobox with a list of drive, plug your key, click update drive list, and highlight your disk........at the moment you select one it's partition table is displayed

click select working drive button and the launch wizard button is now enabled.....click on it a wizard popup in the right half of screen

1st step : do you want to save change ?
2nd step : do you want swap ? which size (512MB or 1GB)?
3nd step : dow you want extra fat 32 ? which size (512MB or 1GB)?
4th step : validation

partitioning is automatic as well as formating

when partitioning is over then third screen appears

3rd screen : BT INSTALLER

here you transfer bt to the drive, make it bootable (with apply or not the changes in lilo), and finally do a filesystem check on all partitions created........

IVE LIMITED THE SIZE OF SWAP AND FAT32 BECAUSE OF SIZE LIMITATIONS OF USB KEYS

but im agree that i must find an easier and flexible way to allow users to dynamically design their backtrack drive ........and for all size.......but it's a good begining...

will post a video as soon as possible......

a video preview of the installer :
http://shamanvirtuel.googlepages.com/bt2usb4nux2.htm

some fixes are still needed ....

and due to usb key structure , i remove swap and windows spaces creations , because create too many partitions and erase too many times a key without wipe it can corrupt all .... and i don't want to be responsible of that....

enjoy

sorry to not giving news since so a long time

the project has been entirely recoded from scratch for bt3, with a new gui

it's a simple wizard and for the moment it's planned in 2 flavours

1)BT3-USBCREATOR
full soft, with 3 modes
1 live
2 live + changes
3 real (not finished)

2)EZPAWN MODULES
the 3 modes will be available as separate modules really simplified in a form of a konsole script

the live installer module for ezpawn, will also give a script, that i hope will update the old lilo+syslinux installers script coming from slax
in a word dedicated for bt

after a discussion with muts(bt master), i have decided to make mandatory the fact user accepts a kind of disclaimer.
this is because we though that with new laws nearly everywhere we need to protect ourselves

the full soft will have all features of my old installer for win+ some

MD5 check
mirror rotation & mirror speed detect
download iso
usage of custom isos & custom md5
edition(on demand) of the syslinux.cfg directly inside the soft before making it bootable

the soft will create all filesystems & partition needed
will check them if wanted
.....

more news will come

shamanvirtuel
01-04-2008, 08:27 AM
THE DRIVE OPERATIONS :

once you will have accepted our disclaimer, you will be thrown to the destination management step

first you need to select A PHYSICAL DRIVE, they are listed in a combobox

NEXT ANOTHER COMBOBOX WILL BE ENABLE, this one lists all filesystems on the drive, with size free & other infos

if you need detailled infos click the info button then a popup specification listing window will appear

choose a partition, to be the root of bt (nevermind if you create new filesystem)

choose if you want to leave filesystem as it is and just wipe the datas or if you want to build a new structure and erase partition table

if you choose the second option , you will be thrown to a mimalistic front-end in order to create and format your partitions

next step is the iso choosing process, i will give you more detail in some days

hello shaman,
I saw your video and looks great, I didn't see it before, is it new?
I have a question about this one.
- how can I use this one after I booted the live-cd (BT3)?
- Is there a way to upgrade from a working usb install of BT2 with changes to a BT3 version, this one I have made it with your windows version.

gts Durana

shamanvirtuel

this video is obsolete

i willl shot a new one sometimes in the week end

the new design is a wizard and offer many functions more ....

NO YOU CAN't migrate because of config files of softwares (the kernel is not the same so maybe pb)

and it's not even available , i mean a correct version

just wait a little, will come soon at the same time than ezpawn beta2

shamanvirtuel

ISO OPERATIONS

bt3-usbcreator will allow you to

1 - use a local iso
a popup file chooser appear and ask you to select iso
click check if you want optionaly to check md5, in this case a modaless popup dialog will appear with the md5 operation in progress

2 - use a custom iso
same as before but you will ask to provide the good checksum if you want to test this custom iso

3 - dl an iso
here, the installer will have a file(for the moment next i want to parse the dl page of re to get latest available mirrors) containing the mirrors for all isos
you will be asked to choose mirror via a check box, adestination via a file chooser, once choosed the installer will check auto the availibility of the mirror
if ok dl will auto begin in a modaless popup dialog with a progress bar showing you the dl in progress
once finished the check iso button will be enabled , but unlike before the md5 become MANDATORY for all downloaded isos

here now we are ready for destination step (see some posts below)

more info to come (installation process)

maybe the 11th because ive finding a way to have reliable resumable dl & to check them partially, in order to get a file correct.

my last test was a dvd reliz, ive dl it in 5 times, each time a different mirror, and what a surprise (well no !) NO MD5 ERRORS

just to be sure have ran this on all my different laptops, with different amount of swap etc....

NO PB

so if i got time i include this as well for the 11th...

sorry for the delay, but just found the solution

ALPHA RELIZ FEATURES

- DISCLAIMER VALIDATED BY BACKTRACK CREW

- LOCAL ISO USAGE (FIXED MD5)
- CUSTOM ISO USAGE (USER PROVIDED MD5)
- DOWNLOAD FROM MIRRORS & MD5 (MANDATORY FOR DL)
details : all mirror are parsed at runtime from the dl page of RE, so you will get latest mirrors available.
you can change default path for save iso
you can do RESUMED DL .... WITH A SPECIAL PARTIAL CHECK TO KEEP INTEGRITY
download progress via a gui progress bar
details of the dl available on demand
you will be asked to keep the file or not when cancelling dl

ISO IS AUTOMOUNTED & AUTODEMOUNTED

now you will be asked for a destination

a combobox is showing all drives , select one and click select partition

another combobox is now enabled listing all partition

select one, click details to show popup stats about size etc....

click SELECT AS BT PARTITION, size is verified and a summary of the installation is displayed in the next step of the wizard , so click next

just a word before continue you will see a button called "expert mode" but grayed in alpha, this one will allow you to reset PT, to wipe the entire disk and to create partitions with more flexibility, BUT IT WILL BE AVAILABLE ONLY IN FINAL

THE INSTALLATION :

once you have validating the installation :
all files from the mounted isos are sized and transfered trough java with a an additional checksum process to keep the transfert good !
a progress bar will show you the progress, and mine is not hanging at80%
lol, old installer was calculating file by file for the progress, me i do checks for each transfert individualy but i added a allover check with the size difference between start & end of transfert, so my progress is linear now

éé

last step is the bootable step

here again you will see an "expert mode button"
this one will be available in beta1 in some weeks
will allow you to edit in a textbox the sysconfig.cfg, that is in the iso before make it bootable, you will be able to add your cheatcodes ....

and finally a reboot function is proposed ...;

yep , so the missing parts are :

- expert mode for partition creation

-save changes creation option

-expert mode for editing sysconfig before making bootable in a text box
WITH BOOTOPTIONS CLICKABLES

INSTALLATION FROM CURRENT LOADED BT : NO MORE NEED OF ISO FILE

INSTALLATION IN REAL MODE ....... VIA A NEW WAY.....(i mean true installs on usbs....)

and a smarter way to extract the rar files because iv found no way to monitor the extraction in java ,

that's all for the moment, all other funtions i have anounced are already here and tested from dl , to make bootable.

the package will be a simple lzm

and will be installed in /pentest/BT3USBCREATOR

so just be patient and you won't be disapointed, not a long time ... promise

I didn't work for me. It said "disk not bootable" or something to that extent. I followed all the steps and even clicked the "bootable" option, but it didn't work.

I will try again in a second; maybe a did something wrong. I'll try to figure it out.

My BIOS supports USB booting, and I booted BT2 fine with your BT 2 USB program. I re-tried it last night again and it did not work. I still got the same error message.

After I clicked "bootable" it gave me the, "Have phun" message IIRC. I will be at work today (and I have no internet there), so I will try to mess with it while I'm there and see if I can figure it out :(

Anyone have any success with this?

shamanvirtuel

you got the have phun message ? not a message saying "your disk should be bootable now.install finished "?

the second one is the good message saying that bootable ops is valid

i will add a check internally to disable next and finish buttons unless boot operation is ok

wait a few hours, im building alpha2

yes !
im surfing with it
and i have some positive feedback

im adding expert mode atm

will allow you to modify in a textbox your sysconfig.cfg

and to revert to default if you change mind

finally i add a check to bootable system saying "something weird happen please install lilo by hand or try expert mode" when you will not be bootable ...

i also disable the next button and the finish button untill you are bootable so now if error you will get error message....

really better like this

and if you make changes to sysconfig.cfg via expert mode you can easily revert them cause i save them in a sysconfig.restore onto the usbkey in boot/sysconfig dir

im currently trying it

i also fix the bad path on file choosers, preventing some persons from choose a file via the interface....

norm now works

BT3-USBCREATOR ALFA 2 CHANGELOG

- bugs with file chooser (inexistant default path) FIXED
- added also a way of choosing a place for saving downloaded isos(default desktop)
-extraction of rar files now use a progressbar and no more that ugly textbox
like iso
-the BOOT EXPERT MODE is now enabled(the grayed button in alfa1) when you click on this a dialog popup with the content of the current syslinux.cfg and allow you to modify it and save it in a click before make it bootable, useful for add some cheatcodes, like saves or nodhcp or acpi=off lol
-when you click one of the bootable buttons a background check will tell you if the disk is now bootable or not, if it says not try to reinstall lilo by hand

some little gui improvement too like the ugly HUGE combobox in destination drive choosers looks now really more sexy

RELIZ IN ONE H OR 2

Awesome! I'll definitely test it out when you release it. I can't wait 'til I can get BT3beta [with save change] on USB!!!

shamanvirtuel
01-14-2008, 01:06 AM
save changes will be fully supported in beta1
with ext2/3 partition creation onto the stick for big sticks or onto another disk like your internal one

you can easily do it with alfa2 with a little more manip
you will need to create & format an ext2 partition before start alfa2
when you will reach bootable step go in expert mode and add changes=/dev/xxx (your ext part)
click bootable

normally that's ok but in beta1 you will also create the ext2 parts in the gui & the syslinux.cfg will be autoupdated with right parameter .....

The progress bar didn't work for me when downloading the file.

Also, when I go to select the partition, there is no partition to choose from, but it lets me choose my device (4GB USB) just fine.

No VMware

Yes, I'm connected (wired) to the internet and it stays connected

Yes, the file came

Yes, I tried with a local ISO

(I'm a Linux newb) I'm not sure. When I go to Konqueror, it shows up. So does that mean it's mounted?

I tried it with a local ISO. I still did not work :(

When I went to "TRANSFERT" it said it was finished after like 2 seconds, which I know is not correct.

Maybe it's just me not being good with Linux, so please don't get discouraged, and I hope this helps! :)

I got it working! Finally! Thanks so much for makin' this dude!

The problem that I had (I don't know if it's a fault in the USBCREATOR, or if it's my fault) was that after the files transfered and I clicked bootable it really didn't make it bootable. I had to do the "bootinst" thing. (Thank God for INSTALL.txt :D)

I couldn't get the save changes to work, but that has nothing to do with your USBCREATOR, so I'll keep that to myself and try to work it out :)

Thanks again man!

No, I have not tried it (being that I'm not an "expert" ;)), but I will and see if I can get it to work.

What do you need for space to install a bootable BT3 on USB? I am interested into installing a very small BT3 package on my 256mb USB stick.

A small package without any programs others than aircrack suite :), KDE and drivers.

Would it be possible?

Please forgive my noobness. This is my first post here. I want to start playing with BT, and it looks like Shamanvirtuel's USB stick installer is probably the best way.

I have a couple quick questions. I've searched for answers, but haven't found them. If I come off as a retard for asking them, I'm very sorry - please be easy on me.

1. I just snagged a 2GB Sandisk Cruzer, I'm hoping it's big enough to install the BT3 Beta on. I didn't see any disk space requirements listed. Is this big enough?

2. The file listed is a .lzm file. Is this a prepacked slax file, like a .deb for debian?

3. I'm not quite sure how to run the file. The instructions I saw listed said "run it via the desktop icon(magic hat)."

Right now, I've booted my laptop from the BT3B Live CD. It automatically recognized & mounted my 2GB Sandisk USB drive.

I have downloaded the .lzm file to the desktop (I assume since I'm running from a Live CD, it's saving the file temporarily in RAM) and I have downloaded the .lzm file to my USB drive. I have tried double-clicking on both files (to run them from the desktop) and both times have gotten the error message: "Some error occured while inserting module to live filesystem."

4. I've a whole bunch of other questions, but they may be so far off the mark, they are probably not worth asking. Can anyone point me in the correction direction?

Thanks!

Yes

Type: "lzm2dir /mnt/sdb1/BT3USBCREATOR.lzm /" and it should magically appear on your desktop

*Keep in mind. I really don't know anything about Linux, but I'm slowly learning, so some, if not all of my info could be completely wrong.

Nice tutorial, I used GParted to create the following on my Imation: 4GB Datastick.

#sdb1/FAT32 {Chosen partition within BT3USBCREATORA21.lzm}
#sdb2/ext3 {Empty}
#sdb3/FAT32 {Empty/For alternative storage and normal file transfer for WinXP files}

My problem is that when I entered my BIOS the only boot option I have are the following:

# CD/DVD
# FDD
# HDD
# LAN

I do not have any USB option. My BIOS is: Phoenix NoteBIOS 4.0 Release 6.1

I might install BT3b 'pureh@tes' way if this doesn't work. Just wondering if anyone has the same BIOS as myself.

My BIOS User Manual [pdf] (http://www.msc-ge.pl/download/pc-system/ipc-produkte/software/Data%20Sheet%20PhoenixBIOS%2040-61%20V01.pdf) states it has USB support....hardly.

EDIT: Found this today, they seem to find a sneaky way around excusing things:

NoteBIOS version 4.04 introduced a feature that allowed a system to boot from an operating system on a CD-ROM. NoteBIOS 4.0 version 6.1 also supports booting from an ATAPI or IDE drive (e.g., Iomega Zip, Fujitsu MO, etc.) that can be formatted as either a floppy or a hard disk drive. If this option is available, the documentation for your SuperDisk drive should list this feature. A drive must be formatted in a special way to make it bootable. There is no guaranteed technique that can be used to detect if your version of the BIOS supports booting from this drive without simply trying it. Note that booting from SuperDisk is not supported on USB or 1394.

I have a little problem with installing BT3 on my USB

I do everything like it's written:

- download USBCREATOR 2.1
- download BT3 iso
- extracted lzm2dir BT3USBCREATOR21.lzm / (2.1 version)
- run "magic hat" :)
- accept disclaimer
- choose source type
- checked md5 (ok)
- select a drive and partition (only one on my USB)
- formated it
- click transfer (until 100%)
- than click on bootable

Than I got message:
"Something..." (like it's ready - don't know exactly)- "Have phun"

So, now, I have restarted my computer, put my bios to start from USB first - and put my usb... and I got message, "missing operating system"

So that means that USB don't have installed BT3... also, on my USB I have one txt file "install" - but I don't understand what do I have to do exactly... can some one tell me what am I missing and explain what to do now, do I have to create some partitions on USB (and how, because I have all ready try it, but didn't make it)... please help... thanks

just rerun bootinst.sh located in /boot folder in the usb key should fix that

I don't know is it a bug (like you said) or it's my fault, probably my fault because I used a "hunday" usb stick...

Today I bought a SanDisk usb and followed pureh@te's tutorial, and now I have it done... but thx anyway...

After you fix a bag, I'll try again with "hunday" usb... just for curiosity :D

Anyway... great work... I have learn everything on this forum... ;)

I have spent two hours searching and reading before I posted this:

When I type in "lzm2dir /mnt/sdb1/BT3USBCREATOR-A2.lzm" I get this

Convert .lzm compressed module back into directory tree
usage: /usr/bin/lzm2dir source_file.lzm existing_output_directory

I have tried downloading the file to the /root and the desktop. What am I doing wrong?

I would suggest doing some reading here first and then trying to follow one of the tutorials here or on the wiki. Then if you have a problem and can not find the answer then maybe you could post a thread in the newbie section of the forums instead of hijacking other threads that may or may not pertain to what you are trying to do.
Also have a look in the rules section for guidance on how to post something here ( read: be descriptive).
Good luck :)
