alternative window manager... bt4-crystal ? blackbox

hi

I have sucessfully unpacked the casper from the bt4_prefinal DVD, updated it to the latest kernel added a bunch of packages, (tor, privoxy, et. al) and recreated a new image... and all works BUT everything is in KDE...

I would like to switch to blackbox/fluxbox or bt4-crystal... Did the usual thing, installed the packages in the image, updated the alternative for x-window-manager removed all the ~/.dot files in /root and tried again...

but it still starts KDE... checked the link again in /etc/alternatives/ its pointing to blackbox, but in vain...

is there a way to switch the desktop ? Can you tell me how...

PS:
1. also tried adding /usr/bin/startfluxbox in the /root/.xinitrc, but X wont start, it starts properly if there is no /root/.xinitrc with KDE
2. when I boot, I have vga=ask, and I select the best mode... however I dont get the background picture in the text terminal (before startx)
how do I get that ?
