I'm wondering if there's a way to pipe the output of the cryptsetup command to a text file, but I don't that would do any good.

Maybe putting "stty echo" right before the cryptsetup command will show the password. I don't think it will but I suppose it is worth a try.

EDIT:

IT'S WORKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FINALLLY!! Thanks ESC201!!

I'm going to summarize my encounter just so nobody suffers the way I did...

1. Make sure your USB isn't faulty.
2. Make sure loop devices are actually open (losetup doesn't make any warnings)
3. If using a liveCD, TAKE IT OUT BEFORE BOOTING THE liveUSB.....backtrack confuses which filesystem to mount!! This detail right here ruined everything for several days!
4. It helps to run the whole install process in one shot.

I did it all over again and added i8042.reset to my kernel (it works for the 1520 Vostro laptop, fixes the keyboard problem).

Thanks again! Now I can finally use backtrack at peace.

Oh I had a question tho, is there a way to adapt this so that it can work in forensic mode? or is that not even necessary?

Glad to hear everything is working.

I am out of town again so I will look at forensics mode when I get back.

Really not sure what to do with this one. I know the 1520 Vostro is used to having keyboard issues with backtrack (at one point when using the encrypted liveUSB it wouldn't recognize any keystrokes at all). So I edited the boot parameters and it worked again, but still no luck when typing in passwords.

what init level are you running in?
