Default BT4 Pre Final As VMware Client

I have installed BT4 as a VMware guest VM. Seems to working fine with a slight exception. When I fire up Wireshark, there are no Capture Interfaces listed? They should come up automatically inside Wireshark.

Any ideas?

Thanks

iwconfig says:

lo no wireless extensions
eth0 no wireless extensions

ifconfig shows eth0 and lo

eth0 is up with an IP assigned.

I can browse the internet wireless from the host as well as the VM guest as I pulled the ethernet cable. My wireless NIC on the host is bridged to the VMnet0.

I would expect to see the VMnet interface shown in Wireshark?

My first thought is that you didn't sudo your wireshark open, in which case it will have no capture interfaces open.

My second is to make sure you realise that your wireless card will not work for injection and such within VMware (because it is built in, and I've only heard of 1 wifi card that is both built in and USB based).

Ah.....dang...been away from Wireshark for over a year. Forgot that little sudo trick! I was brining it up through K menu. Thanks, that took care of that problem.

And yea, I would hope I could at least sniff packets as I am in the early learning stages of wireless as I prepare for certifying (CWNA/CWSP) sometime
early next year.

I am not seeing any 802.11 packets, just TCP web browse releated packets.

No, at least not under that name. eth0 interface is vmnet0 interface (that's why eth0 "is up with an IP assigned"). But you'll not have access to your wireless network, meaning that wireshark will only get traffic from your host to the guest and vice-versa (i think).

EDIT: My advice, go out and buy yourself a usb wireless dongle. Be sure to check if it is compatible, first. OR install BT on your HD.

Yea, I'm considering a USB wireless dongle....
