Default Kernel upgrade & USB with persistent changes

I tried following the instructions on the O.S. Blog to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.30.5 on my USB with persistent changes (i.e. casper r/w). The process appeared to complete successfully. However, when I rebooted uname still shows 2.6.29.4. I tried editing the menu.lst and pointing it to what I think is the correct files but still have not been able to boot into 2.6.30.5.

Can someone please tell me which edits (and on which file(s)) I need to make in order for 2.6.30.5 to boot? I tried searching the forums but was not able to find this exact problem.

Thanks in advance!

Thats probably not going to work because the kernel starts to boot before the persistent file partition takes effect. They easier way would be to use the new upgrade script and remaster your own iso and then make a new usb.

Thanks Pureh@te. Now when I update the kernel, I obviously can't do the reboot from within the chroot'ed environment. Should I do the fix-splash before exiting though?

Thanks again!

Default Achived USB Kernel Update - Stable so Far

What failed:
1)I used the shell script for customizing the CD per "Customising BackTrack Live CD the Easy Way."
2) Used the commands from "BackTrack 4 Pre Final Kernel Update." Minus the splash fix.
3) Let the script finish and create the new ISO.

4) Booted the new Live CD to find the old kernel.

What has worked so far:
1) Used BackTrack 4 Pre Final to create a USB booting with persistent changes.
2) Booted the USB and used the commands from "BackTrack 4 Pre Final Kernel Update" including the splash fix after reboot.
3) Booted the USB to find the old kernel.
4) Copied initrd.img-2.6.30.5 from the boot directery on the casper-re partition to initrd.gz in the boot directory on the BT4 partition
5) Copied vmlinuz-2.6.30.5 from the boot directery on the casper-re partition to vmlinuz in the boot directory on the BT4 partition

6) Booted into the new kernel, and it has been stable with the limited testing I have done so far.

First, I thank you.

I can confirm this works. Also, I am using an atheros-based mini PCI expess card and an alfa AWUS036H USB card. After persistently installing BT4pf to a USB pendrive, updating the kernel, installing madwifi-drivers & r8187-drivers, performing Lennn's fix, blacklisting ath5k & rtl8187, then issuing command depmod -ae, I have my two wireless cards functioning correctly, both passing injection test, and passing aireplay-ng -9 -i ath0 wlan0.

Default confirming

I can also confirm that this works also. all you have to do is replace the files in the Casper partition. Also you could just add an entry to grub and have the updated kernel as well as the old one (i know there is a security issue with the old one but I always keep the older version also.)
