There are many variants of this type of adapter, first off check the label on the back and does it say speedbooster on the front?
>The wusb54gc is compatible with BT
>The wusb54gsc is the speedbooster version and is not compatible.
>The wusb54g is not compatible.

I say this as many companies will restock with another variant, not change the order page on their website and will send you a different version when you place an order. Your adapter should be recognised as rausb0 although you will need the advanced drivers to use the aircrack suite.

I found this:

Linksys WUSB54GC-EU v2 USB wifi dongle has USB ID 1737:0073 and is not detected

RTL8187B chipset so the rtl8187 module should support it.

Are you using a live cd or vmware image? On VMWARE you have to import your card into the VM (eg I use VMWARE workstation I go to the vm menu, select removable devices and select my adapter from the list) it has to be connected to a VM in this way before BT4 will recognise that it exists.

Wrong!linksys WUSB54G V3 is fully supported with external atenna mods.wusb54GC having rt73 chipset is supported.
all rt73 chipset and rt61 chipset enabled cards are supported by BackTrack

I'm also using the same USB stick, I havn't had any luck in finding a way to get it working. It worked when I ran the system on the live cd. But not when it's fully installed. I have discovered that it is a 'rt73' chipset. Bit stuck though
