Why would you want to encrypt your RB drive?
Do you have some sort of Encryption co-processor in your machine? If not then yes encrypting a drive (and decrypting it as you use it) puts additional load on resources and therefore reduces performance. re: Win 7, dunno for sure but I suspect MS has stuck with RB. I'm sure some quick google'fu could answer that question easily.

Interestingly enough, as I expected, Win7 did let me use RB on the same USB drive I used for vista, but of course when I encrypted, vista was no longer able to use it. I still cant figure out how to encypt the win7 drive, with Bitlocker, because my computer doesn't have some required piece of hardware. I am supposed to be able to use a usb device instead, but it hasnt given me any indication of how to do this.
