Default Card for desktop

Hi,

I've been checking out some of the cards in this thread and they all seem to be targeted towards laptops (PCMCIA connection).

What would be the best PCI card to buy for a desktop?

Thanks for your input. Regards,

Nick B.

Well aircrack doesn't support all that many PCI cards but you can see the recommended ones here :

I'd say your best bet was the WG311T with the Atheros chipset.

Thanks for your reply. I'll probably go for that one. I'm going to attempt to make a can style external antenna. Wish me luck!

You might have better luck with this poor-man's antenna :

Cheaper and seems a lot easier to make and I know it works. Friend of mine made one and managed to get a pretty decent signal.

Default Best for Going through WALLS

I currently am trying to access a neighbor's wifi. I can recieve a decent signal in my bedroom but none at all in my living room where I really need the signal. My wlan card has an external antenna connection via mc. Basically I was hoping to find on what your opinion is on how to obtain a good signal in my living room. My apartment setup is requiring me to use the signal after going through a few walls and I would like to know what type of antenna or other setup would yield the best signal result for range through the building as opposed to long distance range or line of sight. Also, my wlan card has about 30mW of power and was also considering purchasing a senao card with 200mw. Would a card with this kind of power along with a nice antenna provide a good system for getting that signal through the walls and one story of building. Thanks guys any info would be great.

Default Z-Com XI-325HP+ 300mW Wardriving Prism PCMCIA WLAN Card

I got me a Zcom w-lan card its a 802 b card and supports up to 14 channels.
This one is realy Powerfull. Its exactly the same layout as the senao card but mutch cheaper its got two external MMCX connectors to connect Anntennas. And with a output power of 300 mW the best worldwide. You can easylie flash it an use another firmware if u want to. Also it supports ARP injection while collecting iv's you just have to use the patched hostap drivers built within Backtrack. Just write Swith-to-Hostap ... i dont wanna go into any details ..

Thanks for you post. The USB based antenna looks nice and easy to make but I was hoping to make one to connect to a PCI card via a pigtail.
Been reading "Wireless hacks" by O'Reiley which recommends a nice link. Check it out.

Default Antenna silver casing

Hi

Thanks for the guide, however I´m not sure what you mean by "silver casing" for the WG511T? Is the card on the link what you mean?
Many thanks in advance

Default Netgear WG511T

This card worked really nice for me when I got it. It didn't even have to reconize that there was a card in the slot (Not that that's a particularly good thing now). And all I had to do was push the card in, and reboot it. Then when the lower light of the card was lit, I just put "dhcpcd ath0" into command prompt and then I could hook up to my network! Easy as that, although I'm not sure if it will be the same for any other access points.

Oh, and I'm new here, so hi!
